Hydrolyzed collagen is great for weight loss, it is included in many products ingredients. Some of the products that include it is gelatin, medicine capsules, as well as other foods. Most commercial collagen is derived from bones and cartilage from certain animals such as cows. According to according to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, most hydrolyzed collagen is created by grinding or pulverizing bones. Once that’s completed it’s placed in hydrochloric acid and then in sodium hydroxide, which will then later be dehydrated. This will in turn create a powdery substance which could be used for gelatin. This is a very cheap and effective way to create collagen and this is why some weight loss products include this.

Collagen has been used for over a century, it has been primarily used in gelatin. According to researchers the first brand of gelatin to incorporate this was created by a company called Knox which was made back in the 1800s. Later more gelatin company’s started to incorporate hydrolyzed collagen in their products such as the company Jelly-O which was introduced to the market just a few years after the release of Knox gelatin. Both products are still being incorporated in hundreds of food products till this day.

How Does It Help with Weight Loss & Muscle Growth?

It’s not uncommon to find that a lot of beverage-based weight loss products use hydrolyzed collagen. A lot of these products actually claim to work while you sleep since that’s when the body does most of its repair work. There has also been research done by Brigham and Women’s Hospital which show that collagen can also relieve joint pain, which is probably why a lot of athletes use it since they’re constantly putting their body under large amount of stress which wreak havoc on their joints.

Some studies also show that collagen can help increase muscle mass, as well as the fat burning capabilities of your body. Most of these claims come from companies selling the product and only a few companies have any clinical studies but this has yet to be scientifically proven to say the least.

There Are Study to Back Up the Weight Loss Claims

There is one particular study that stood out from the rest which was conducted by Nutrition Advisor. In this study their results show that hydrolyzed collagen helped reduce the weight of 50 overweight people. The study was conducted by Joel B. Lao of Essentially Yours Industries Corp, according to the study all you have to do is take 1 teaspoon of hydrolyzed collagen which produced an average of 10 pounds of weight loss in the span of three months. The participants were not required to perform any exercise because this would have skew the results of the study.

Combine It with Exercise

Now, even though the study shows that you did not need to actually exercise to get the benefit of losing weight when taking hydrolyzed collagen, it’s still recommended. As you already know exercise is essential for building muscle. So even though collagen can help you lose weight it is still recommended to utilize some exercise regimen. There is no significant evidence showing that ingesting collagen by itself can help build muscle.

Side Note

Collagen can do amazing things for your body. But one thing you need to understand is that if you’re a vegetarian or if you’re allergic to shellfish or any marine-based oboe bovine based substance then collagen might not be for you. Essentially, everyone needs it. But there is currently at least to my awareness no. 100% vegan or vegetarian-based collagen supplements because they all require the use of animals.
